Temple Sinai ’s First Mitzvah Day

More than one thousand dollars was collected by the students in Temple Sinai ’s “Fixing the World” special activity class at their first Mitzvah Day program!

On Shabbat morning, February 6, 2010, Temple Sinai students, their families, and members of the congregation participated in Mitzvah Day coordinated by the students in Harriet Robbins’ "Fixing the World" special activity class.  Mitzvah Day gave everyone the opportunity to contribute money to support various charities at home and in Israel .  The students set up tables with a Tzedakah box and information about their charities, spoke about the work done by the organizations and answered the many questions asked of them.

The students collected money to support Packages from Home (which supports Israeli soldiers), The Jewish National Fund (water and forests), NEADS (Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans), Breast Cancer Awareness, Pennies for Peace, Birthday Wishes, and Large Print Prayer books for Temple Sinai .

Coffee was available for the adults who brought in a non-perishable food item for Rachel's Table.  Our other on-going Tzedakah projects, collecting empty pill bottles with the labels removed, and cancelled stamps for the Veterans, were also collected that morning.

Participation in the Mitzvah Day Project helped the students become an individual who “gives, shares and cares.”

Students in the “Fixing the World” class and their projects are:  Ethan Cohen (Packages from Home), Jacob Eagle (NEADS), Marissa Fortugno (Breast Cancer Awareness), Max Halpern (NEADS), Sarah Kotin (Pennies for Peace), Zachary Milaszewski (JNF), Jonathan Rubin (Large Print Prayer Books), Cammi Sperling (JNF), Allie Trotta (Breast Cancer Awareness), and Hannah Zamore (Birthday Wishes). Their teacher is Harriet Robbins.
